Woven Identity
Coding, Photoshop Scripting
2024

I used generated Photoshop scripts to create photocollages that abstract banig, traditional Filipino handwoven mats. This project reflects my exploration of identity as both a Filipino and a Kentuckian through coded recontextualization and process work, examining lossy compression, digital decay, and the legibility of cultural identity across generations.

I sourced imagery from my personal collection and Flickr images from my parents’ hometowns. The scripts randomly selected portions of the canvas, removed surrounding details, and layered them together. After iterating with different scripts, I turned to p5.js to generate a consistent flow of collaged outcomes, allowing me to capture numerous versions for further distortion in Photoshop using another script. The outcomes shown represent various stages of this process.
